How to keep your Liver healthy ?

Want to get rid of hormonal imbalance, lose the excess fat, regain your metabolism, have healthy blood circulation, get rid of bloating, constipation or other weird digestive issues then maybe it is time to revisit the health of your Liver.

LIVER :

Liver is both an organ and one of the largest glands in our body . It detoxifies various metabolites, it is involved in the synthesis of proteins and is also actively involved in the digestion process by producing biochemicals . As you can see in the picture, it is located next to the stomach, near the upper right portion of the abdomen.

Did you know that anything we eat and drink is first screened by the liver. It filters toxins, drugs, and many of our own hormones before allowing them into general circulation.

Many people damage their liver by oral drug overdose. If you are on any medication whatsoever , your top priority should be to take care of your Liver.

In fact, all of us should be extremely conscious of our Liver health. We are all exposed to environmental toxins whether it is through food supply or health devices, building materials, a minimal exposure to chemicals is enough to mess up our body’s detoxification system. So, whether you are a vegetarian or not, vegan or pescatarian, everyone should take care of their liver.

 




 

Tip no. 1

  1. DRINK WATER

Being a Nutrition coach and a Personal Trainer ,I interact with numerous clients day in and out ! I was surprised to find that 80% of the people don’t drink enough water. I personally love the taste of drinking water and any day prefer water over juice, soda or sparkling water .

I tell people that your very first and the most important thing that you can do to protect your Liver is to drink enough water. So friends, hydrate, hydrate and hydrate more often .

Think of it like this..You shower everyday don’t you? Well, now it is time for your Liver to take a shower and yes, it has to be done daily too. When you drink water, the Liver tissues are getting a cleanse along with getting rid of any toxin accumulation. This way your kidneys are able to function properly and your Liver gets to do its job of metabolizing its waste.

How much water should I drink?

A common question I hear each day…

Recommendation is 8 glasses of water. If you are already doing that there is no harm in going up to 9 glasses or 10. But do not and again DO NOT jump from 2 glasses of water a day to 10…Water consumption increases and decreases based on your activity level for that day ! For me, the day I do a high-intensity workout, my water consumption is almost a gallon, other days maybe not so much. When I travel, it reduces but I make up for it when reaching my destination. Listen to your body…mind-body connection is important and that is my next most important tip no.2




2.ESTABLISH A MIND-BODY CONNECTION along with a healthy MINDSET

This is my holistic approach to great health .

Your emotions and mind-set directly affect your health whether it is positively or negatively.

I can give you not 5 but 1500 tips to stay healthy and happy  but if you do not believe in any of them, no matter how much you follow, let me tell you it ain’t working…

In my opinion BELIEF is an emotion and a very strong one. You got to believe like never before that everything will be alright and believe in your dedicated habits of excellence to reap the rewards for you. Unfortunately, our society is headed towards a no human connection due to technology and now a lack of mind-body connection is sad. What is the difference between us and robots ?

Find that connection friends. Live life and control your destiny.

Anger is a negative emotion that affects the Liver.

Channel your anger in a different direction, find the root cause of it , don’t target your loved ones with it, nor do I recommend you to keep it to yourself and bottle up that anger to become an outburst one day .

Ways to find mind-body connection:

  • Find a quiet area in your home where you spend a few quiet moments each day to listen to yourself and self-evaluate.

 

  • Live in the present ( I can write a book on this ) , feel the presence of your loved ones present around you, acknowledge them and sense the joy that surrounds you.

 

  • Exercise ( a therapy for many ) , whatever form of exercise you enjoy, Yoga, Pilates, Crossfit, Dance, Swimming, or just playing with your kids in the park.

 

  • Believe in the magic of BELIEF ! It is a mind-set, isn’t it ?

All this is great but let us find out what are you feeding your body ? A healthy mind-set and a healthy body are equally important ! That is my next tip for you..

  1. FEED THE RIGHT FOOD TO YOUR BODY’s MOST ESSENTIAL ORGAN

Our liver metabolizes the macros Carbohydrates, fats and protein from the food we eat. We humans have thrived on eating varied and seasonal foods. If you still intake soda, processed foods , packaged foods, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, excessive sugary foods, too much restaurant food, refined carbs, red meat, excessive alcohol then it is time to make a lifestyle change, a behavioral change and start forming healthy habits.

Our Liver needs to remain healthy to convert fatty acids to triglycerides and release them into circulation.

It also helps maintain carbohydrate homeostasis also converting other sugars to glucose.

With protein intake, it deaminates amino acids, converting them into glucose derivatives and free nitrogen for excretion through the urine.

List of a few foods to consume for a healthy liver :

  • Greens ( I love Spinach )
  • mushrooms

I would recommend as much home made food as possible. This way you are in control of what oil to use and the method of cooking involved. Till today , I pack my snacks and food along with my water bottle wherever I go. At times it is difficult especially when I travel to destinations internationally but I try my best to control what I feed my body. For times like that when there is not much you can do, make sure you are detoxing your liver with water, establishing that mind-body connection somehow, and supplementing with the best Liver health supplements in the market .   1. This is a really informative article. I am very familiar with fatty liver disease, because I have it which lead to type 2 diabetes, or vice versa. I don’t know which came first. I will definitely be using this information to improve my own health.

  2. I’m currently taking Milk Thistle to help my liver. I injured myself over 4 years ago and gained some weight from the impact. I’m usually quite thin but with the sudden weight gain, I had discomfort on my side and had an ultrasound. I was told I had a fatty liver which made sense and I did a search then bought the Milk Thistle.

    Not long after I started taking it I had relief! I also started to drink more water. Your article is very informative, thorough and I’m proof that Milk Thistle really works along with your recommended food and other suppliments!

  3. Oh my this is a great gift to find your article! I need to take care of my liver as it was borderline to bad in the last blood screen test, and was wondering what to do as I don’t drink alcohol nor I medicate (I try to avoid medicine unless it’s needed), and since I’m still breastfeeding I didn’t want to get a supplement that would counteract milk production or that could potentially harm my baby through my milk.. Milk thistle is actually great for milk production so I’m thinking of getting some as it’ll be like striking two birds with one stone! Thanks so much

  5. Great information. I do take a prescription that can cause damage to the liver. I have to make sure that I drink a ton of water. I am not fond of water, so I do this with flavored water, etc. Is that good enough?

    • Matts Mom , yes, water or flavored water is fine as long as you hydrate well. Squeeze some lemon drops in your water and see if you like that ! It saves you from adding unnecessary fillers that come with flavored water.

    The liver is one of the body’s vital organs and so it is very important to take really good care of it. Being an advocate of healthy living myself, I am always searching for different ways to take care of my health which includes taking care of the different organs in my body.

    Drinking enough water is definitely one of the simplest ways to take care of our liver. And water does not only benefit the liver but our overall health.

    Concerning foods, is it true that a high protein diet can be damaging to the liver? So what about those who are on a low carb, high protein diet? Or those on a keto diet? What are the chances that by trying to lose weight, they could actually be damaging their liver?

      With Keto diet, all I can say is “It is not fat that makes people fat”, It is when we don’t have the ability to burn the fat,
      Some people metabolize fats amazingly well and some don’t . We all have different gene variations and expressions. Whether you are on keto or a high protein diet, our liver does work very hard for us to clear the toxins, By taking care of it , we are making its task easier. Other than drinking water, mindset , nutrition I think supplementing with the right supplement is extremely important for the health of our liver in the long-term.

  9. Great post Dini. Lots of really good information. As someone who is a keen advocate of eating and drinking healthily, I drink lots of water during the day to flush out all the toxins, which gives me more energy. I am always trying to get my children to drink more.
