Why food allergies and associated anaphylaxis once an exception are now on an exponential rise ? What can we do about it? I know it is not so easy to answer this question especially because it is pointed to our children..we want clarity with no ambiguity and we better have the right answers…I am here to tell you “Yes, we can do something about protecting our children from the ever increasing food allergens “.babygirl

Shocking facts and statistics from Food Allergy Research and Education(FARE) .

  • As many as 15 million people have food allergies
  • 6 million children affected are under age 18.
  • The economic cost of children’s food allergies is nearly $25 billion.

This number has doubled in the past 5 years and it keeps on growing.

So, why are there more food allergies today than 20 or 30 years ago !

Let me first explain that an anaphylactic shock is the most worrisome consequence of food allergy and is extremely fatal. Some foods can cause life-threatening illness called anaphalyxis. The most common foods responsible for this are :peanuts

  1. Peanuts
  2. Tree nuts
  3. Soybeans
  4. Eggs
  5. Wheat
  6. Fish
  7. Shellfish
  8. Cow’s Milk

Your child could be allergic to any one or more of the above foods because of multiple reasons

  • Allergies filter down from family members
  • Semantic (More symptoms are labeled as “food allergies” than in the past)
  • Low immune system
  • GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD ( this is a big one)

Do you remember your Parents or Grandparents having food allergies?

NO ! and this is the reason why….

#Food was cooked at homerice

Home made meals were and still are the healthiest option . Eating outside was a luxury. I remember my Mom making the spice mix, dressings, chutneys at home and I still follow this tradition.

We as children were involved in the food preparation process and this involvement in home cooked meals has helped me and my family in adapting healthy-eating habits.

Solution for your home today: Try to get back to home-cooked meals or have someone make home-cooked meals for you. Avoid restaurant food or fast foods for you and your children. Avoid buying canned food or packaged food .

# Seasonal food was consumed

Growing up I remember seasonal food coming from small markets to our door step and this was every day. So there were fresh fruits and vegetables consumed by the entire family. You can imagine how nutrient-dense our food used to be.

Solution for your home today: Buy Certified Organic produce especially the ones labeled NON-GMO.

Farmers market is good too but there is often cross-pollination. One farmer can be certified organic but if his neighboring farmer has genetically modified crops, nature could mix the genetic pools.

# No Artificial sweeteners were around

Artificial sweeteners have become a major component of processed foods over the past twenty years. FDA has deemed it safe but believe me..your children are much better off avoiding these chemical alternatives in the food they consume. Natural sugar has played an important role in our evolution providing us energy, fuel for running and many other physical activities.

Solution for your home today: Make homemade juices in your Omega juicer or any juicer that you might have. Juicing does not require any added sugar. Smoothies with banana and other fruits also do not require any added sugar. For baking use natural sugar in limited quantity for your children.

#Baby foods were made at home

I know lot of Moms who have a busy profession and still choose to make baby food at home in their baby bullet. It needs prep time and she would make a lot of pouches and freeze them over the weekend. Our Parents and Grandparents did the same except that they had the time and help at home to make it fresh each day.

I know prepackaged baby foods can be an easy alternative for busy Moms but there are countless benefits for your child to have home-made baby food.

Babies are at a much higher risk from pesticides and hormones because their developing bodies manage these ingredients very differently.

Solution for your home today: Make small changes and have your child consume homemade baby food from certified organic produce.

Remember your health is your biggest wealth and your children’s health is your greatest wealth.

Cheers to healthy living !

  1. It’s so true. Nowadays, meals are often consumed at food places, restaurants, cafes, etc because of both parents are working and there is no one at home able to make homecooked food.

Now that I am working from home full-time, I make more conscious effort to choose certified organimic products, as much as I can, and use more natural ingredients to cook my food.

I have also tried to avoid eating processed food, although the husband and the children are quite into it. But they are learning, slowly… ๐Ÿ™‚

    Cheers!

    • Julz, thank you . I am glad the information was of help to you. Glad you are able to cook home cooked meals for yourself and your family. Working from home is a great option that allows us to do that.

  2. Hi Dini! This was a very informative article. I have always been an advocate for eating homemade meals but I had no idea that it could actually reduce the development of food allergies. My baby is going two in December so I found this article very relevant and I’m glad that I came across it.

I also like how you broke up your paragraphs into small sections.

Very nice, Keep it coming! I’m going to bookmark your page.

  3. Thanks Dini, This article is right on everything it suggests. I grew up in a family taht went out only for a special occasion and made everything at home. No artificial anything was part of that era. GMO is probably one of the leading causes of cancer and the only way to go is farmers markets or visiting a local organic farm if available. Very well done and relevant to all who are interested in living healthy. Thanks for the great article.
