Exercise and Oxidative Stress ! Are they related ?

Most of us have heard these terms “oxidative stress” also known as “free radical damage” . What are we doing about it. The aging process itself is caused by free radical damage not to mention countless other degenerative diseases like arthritis, cataract, alzheimers’, parkinsons’, cancer and many more.

Does exercise cause oxidative stress ?

The answer is YES.

Problem  : Free radicals (oxygen molecules with one unpaired electron)

Solution  : Antioxidants ( Neutralize the free radical damage by giving up an electron and balance the unpaired electron)

Many of you might be thinking about quitting exercising right now…ha ha don’t even think in that direction.

If working out is a part of your daily routine you might have already experienced the same benefits like most of us do.

  • Better sleep
  • Feeling more vibrant
  • Great energy levels
  • Better skin
  • Increase in strength and endurance
  • Prevention of heart disease

Coming back to oxidative stress and how to overcome it….

I am going to share an effective way of neutralizing these free radicals which in my opinion is a miracle drink. I continue to use it on myself with great results and want all of you to benefit from it too. Before we get on to it….

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidant is nothing but a substance that has the ability to give up an electron to a free radical and balance out the unpaired electron.

Don’t our bodies have antioxidants? Why do I need to drink or eat something to provide my body with these antioxidants?

You are thinking right. Our body is an amazing piece of work and is marvelously and beautifully made. We do have an army of antioxidants that can fight the war with the free radicals but unfortunately the army of free radicals in our body is way more because of  these factors:

  1. Increase in pollution in our environment
  2. Food that we eat has high levels of chemicals,pesticides and fertilizers
  3. How about prescription drugs? Oh YES ! The damage caused by free radicals through prescription  drugs is a new topic in itself.
  4. Processed and fast foods
  5. Alcohol
  6. Stress
  7. Excessive exposure to sunlight

Let us talk about the oxidative stress induced during high intensity exercise . At times the existing army of antioxidants cannot win the war raging in our bodies caused by those free radicals. We need more.

Not all free radicals are bad though. Most people from medical profession that I talked to say that there is nothing to worry about the free radical damage caused during exercise since our body has its own defense of antioxidant protection but we are asked to fight the free radicals caused by all the above mentioned factors.



My point is , there is a certain amount of damage happening in our body on a daily basis by these “killer molecules” which is yet another name for free radicals caused by a combo of all the seven reasons mentioned above. Let us just work on taking care of it and as I mentioned we need more antioxidants, ‘the more the merrier’. One of the known recommended ways that everyone would suggest is “Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables”.



Yes, we do need to eat the colorful vegetables and fruits to get the antioxidants. Add this ‘miracle drink’ as well to your daily nutrient intake “ SPINACH JUICING” and feel the difference . You will be astounded .

Spinach ?? Why ?

Spinach is known by different names today “FIT FOOD” and “SUPER FOOD”. Now it is also known as the “Muscle-building food”.



Well, we know it is loaded with phtyonutrients being a dark-leafy vegetable. Spinach is also known to have the following vitamins and minerals.

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin K1
  • Vitamin A
  • Folic acid
  • Potassium
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Fiber

With all its nutrients Spinach is very well known for getting rid of oxidative stress to a great level.


If you have read my posts and blogs by now you all know that I am big fan of juicing vegetables. I have been Spinach juicing for a while now maybe 3 times a week or so. I am also passionate about weight-lifting . Now, I do have significant amount of energy levels through out the day and I definitely eat healthy. I just wanted to be able to strength train 5 days a week with intense energy and no soreness. One day after my strength training class I had Spinach Juice  as a post-workout drink juiced in my amazing Omega Juicer.


The feeling of immense energy boost that I experienced was holistic. I was no longer sore and was able to do strength training for 5 consecutive days. Spinach Juicing is a part of my daily routine now and I cannot emphasize its importance enough.

This is what happened….

I drank it as a post-workout drink.

I got the protein, minerals,enzymes and all the necessary nutrients to replenish my body.

My body started the recovery process by healing from the cellular damage.

It alkalized my body right away/ restored the PH balance of the body.

Recipe for juicing:

5 cups of Spinach leaves

1 apple

½ lemon

1 small piece of ginger

Juice them all and drink it fresh. If you choose to refrigerate then do so for no more than 24 hrs. Most effective when taken fresh. Drink it right after your high intensity workout and comment below on how it helped you.
